A Dominican mother comes to Boston to establish a new life for her family, but becomes overwhelmed. This is the story of her journey through mental illness in a foreign land, her struggle to reconnect with her family, finally getting the help she needs, and the help she offers other immigrants. (Nick Ciorogan)

Since 1992, October 10th has marked World Mental Health Day, established to raise awareness of mental disorders across the globe and to promote investments in prevention and treatment services.

This video tells the story of an immigrant mother from the Dominican Republic who came to Boston to build a new life for her children, and chronicles her decade-long battle with mental illness in a foreign land, her struggle to reconnect with family, and her journey back to health.

This is one of a series of short-form documentaries telling the stories of immigrant families affected by mental illness. The project is supported by the Rosalynn Carter Fellowship for Mental Health Journalism.
