MEXICO CITY - The Mexican government says the country's rising drug use has stabilized.
The Health Department's 2011 national addictions survey says 1.5 per cent of Mexicans aged 12 to 65 admitted to using illegal drugs at least once, compared to 1.4 per cent in 2008, the last time the survey was conducted.
The report notes that marijuana remains the most commonly used drug, followed by cocaine.
The survey was conducted in 17,691 households throughout the country between June 13 and August 29, 2011. It was released Monday.
President Felipe Calderon has opened dozens of drug education centers while pursuing an offensive against drug traffickers.
Calderon said: "The rising trend has been stopped; that is to say, we still have the problem but the tendency has been broken."
