SANTIAGO DE CHILE - Experts from several countries are in Chile through Wednesday to discuss the advances in scientific investigations regarding treatments and pharmacological strategies against drugs.
According to a statement from the Chilean Foreign Ministry, the Symposium is part of the preparatory activities for the next summit of the Community of Latin American and Caribbean States (CELAC), which will be held in Chile in late January 2013.
Specialists from Chile, Brazil, Mexico, Argentina, Uruguay, Cuba, Puerto Rico, United States, Canada and Spain will attend the symposium, entitled: Progress and challenges in scientific research on treatments, pharmacological strategies and vaccines against drug addiction.
Among the speakers is Elena Medina-Mora, director of the Ramon de la Fuente National Institute of Psychiatry in Mexico City, and the author of the book 'Cocaine and Crack', Marilyn Carroll, researcher from the University of Minnesota.
According to organizers, the symposium's goal is to strengthen the scientific communities in the region to encourage basic and pre-clinical research in these areas, thereby improving the treatment against drug addiction through vaccines, antidotes and more effective drugs.
"This way, CELAC seeks to coordinate the prevention policies and programs of the 33 States to fight the consequences of drug addiction on public health and security, and its relationship with the increase of transnational organized crime," the statement says.
The meeting's conclusions will be submitted to the heads of state and governments of the countries belonging to CELAC, for inclusion in the international body's action plans, whose rotating presidency is currently occupied by Chile, and will be transferred to Cuba in January.
