The Attorney General for Environmental Protection (Profepa) rescued 40 exotic animales this month, including a spider monkey, two types of land turtles, eight parrots and two mockingbirds. On Wednesday, Profepa representative Guy Adrián Piña Herrera stated that 12 of the rescued animals were freed in the southern part of Quintana Roo.
He stated that the remaining animals would not return to their habitats, because they were accustomed to living in captivity.
The rescues were made possible, he stated, through vehicle inspections in areas that presented possibilities of illegal wildlife possession.
He added that the illegal exploitation of animals continues in the region, and the public has been asked to avoid buying these animals, but, if they do, they must demand an invoice and official documentation from the seller.
He stated that removing a species from its natural habitat generates a loss of biodiversity and that some methods of extraction implicate habitat destruction, which can have serious impacts on ecosystems. Piña Herrera said that those responsible would be penalized by up to nine years of prison and fined 150 to 50,000 days of minimum wage.
