President Felipe Calderón said last week that extreme poverty and inequality declined by 23 percent between 2000 and 2010.
The president’s speech was delayed for almost an hour because at 10:00 a.m., when the event was scheduled to begin, the auditorium was empty. Event organizers postponed the speech until a few more seats were filled. Calderón said that, thanks to his administration’s social policy, more than 34 million people in poverty received economic and food aid that improved their quality of life.
“And according to the census, and information from the National Statistics, Geography, and Information Institute (INEGI), which is the available information, extreme poverty did not only not increase, fortunately, but decreased by 23 percent. There’s another detail – inequality also went down,” he said. Calderón went on to say that in spite of the twin economic and food crises, the people did not give in to adversity. Which is why, he added, poverty and hunger must not be allowed to crush the dreams of men.
The president said that he was taking advantage of the last day before the electoral ban to talk about social aid programs because once the ban begins he won’t be able to publicize his administration’s achievements.
Calderón’s wife Margarita Zavala and Secretary of Social Development Heriberto Félix Guerra also attended the event.
Félix Guerra said that social aid programs are not handouts for the Mexican people, but programs to bring justice to the most vulnerable sectors of the population, because, “poverty of today is the father of poverty tomorrow.”
