The Goldman Environmental Foundation announced on Monday the six winners of its 2012 prizes for grass-roots green activism, with four of the awards honoring individuals involved in protecting water resources from pollution and industrial development, says the Environmental News Service.
The $150,000 prizes, established in 1989, recognize “environmental heroes” in Africa, Asia, North America, Central and South America, Europe, and the world’s islands.
This year’s winners include Ma Jun, a Chinese journalist and watchdog who monitors corporate violations of air- and water-pollution laws; Ikal Angelei, of Kenya, who is fighting plans for a dam that would severely restrict water supplies to Lake Turkana, the world’s largest desert lake; and Caroline Cannon, an Alaskan challenging water and gas drilling in the Arctic seas.
This year's winners are:

Risking her life, Ikal Angelei is fighting the construction of the massive Gibe 3 Dam that would block access to water for indigenous communities around Lake Turkana.

A Catholic priest, Father Edwin Gariguez is leading a grassroots movement against a large-scale nickel mine to protect Mindoro Island’s biodiversity and its indigenous people.
North America

Caroline Cannon is bringing the voice and perspective of her Inupiat community in Point Hope to the battle to keep Arctic waters safe from offshore oil and gas drilling.
South America
