The sounds of saws and hammers filled a Central Illinois warehouse this weekend as nearly 150 volunteers came together to build houses on a mission for Mexico.
A number of Peoria area churches pitched in to help Missions Ministries, a Mexico-based organization that helps people who have been stranded after failing to cross the border.
"There's just a lot of needs there, we're talking 4,000 feet of desert, it's not like there's trees you can cut down not like there's things you can grow," said Executive Director Chris Henshaw.
Henshaw said many of those people live in shacks made of cardboard and sheets of plastic. The new homes make life more spacious.
