Survival International: The Best Way to Help the Earth's Most Threatened Tribe

Colin Firth and Survival International: Save the Awà People (Survival International)

Last year Survival International launched our latest campaign for the Awá, Earth's most threatened tribe. So far, over fifty thousand emails have been sent to Brazil's Minister of Justice, urging him to remove the illegal loggers.

The government announced it would make the case a priority, and would release special funds to remove the invaders. The first base camp, from where operations to evict the loggers and other invaders will be conducted, has now been built. These developments would not have occurred without the help of Survival supporters.

But this isn't enough. There are only 450 Awá; many of them are uncontacted. If the loggers see them, they'll kill them. It's vital that we keep the Awá on the government's radar, and pressure it to evict the invaders urgently. This is the time to step up our campaign, and for that we need your help once more.

Time and again Survival supporters have been the only barrier standing between tribal peoples and those that wish to take their lands and so destroy them. Supporters often ask me what the best way to help Survival is. My answer: if you can, please donate. With your money, we can secure objectives that many think are impossible. Our campaigns have worked, time and again, for decades.

Your gift, however small, will enable tribes like the Awá to survive and pass on their ancestral land to their children's children. Please give whatever you can.

With sincere thanks and best wishes.

Here's what our campaign for the Awá has achieved in the last year. With your help, we will win. Without it, we could do nothing.

  • Made the Awá's own voice heard internationally for the first time
  • Helped supporters to send over 50,000 emails to Brazil's Minister of Justice
  • Prompted the new head of Brazil's Indian affairs department to declare the Awá 'top priority'
  • Pushed the government into building the first protection post at the entrance to Awá land
  • Prompted the mining company Vale to consult directly with the Awá
  • Reported the Awá's unprecedented visit to Brazil's capital
  • Enabled supporters to spread the message all over the world with our Awáicon
  • Revealed how the Awá are outnumbered 10:1 by invaders
  • Protested at Brazilian embassies across the world
  • Recruited film and TV stars, artists and other celebrities to support the Awá
  • Secured thousands of articles in the world's press
  • Lodged an urgent petition with the Americas' leading human rights body calling on it to hold Brazil's government to account
