Italy beat Mexico 2-1 in soccer’s Confederations Cup at Rio de Janeiro’s Maracana stadium.
Andrea Pirlo, playing in his 100th game, opened the scoring with a free kick in the 27th minute before Javier Hernandez drew Mexico level with a penalty seven minutes later. Mario Balotelli scored the winner in the 78th minute.

Fiesta Inside, War Outside: Protests marred the Confederations Cup in Brazil as riot police clashed with demonstrators near the Maracana stadium on Sunday (June 16), and soccer fans got caught in the scuffles. The activists were protesting against what they see as excessive use of public funds for stadiums and sporting events instead of health, education programs and public transport, and tried to approach the stadium where Italy were playing Mexico.
