United Nations Entity for Gender Equality and the National Women’s Institute reported that 5 out of every 10 women in México over the age of 15 has experienced some form of violence.

Unfortunately, the report says that 26% of Mexican women believe that if there is violence in the home, it is a family issue and should not be discussed outside of the family.

The states in México with the highest incidence of violence against women are the States of México with 56.9%, Nayarit with 53.7%, Sonora with 53.7%, the Federal District with 51.9% and Colima with 50.2%.

Forty-two percent of Mexican women say they have been humiliated or belittled.

Marcia Castro, UN representative in México, said, “Violence against women and girls can and should be prevented, but it is not easy; we have spent several years working on these issues within the UN.”

Castro added that 13.5% of women in México have been beaten by their partners and 20% have received complaints from their partners for the way they spend money, or they have been forbidden to work or study, or they have had their money or property taken from them.

According to the UN report, in 2010 there were more than 584 cases of femicide in 5 of México’s cities with Ciudad Juarez having the highest number, followed by Tijuana, Baja California, Chihuahua, Culiacan, Sinaloa, Ecatepec de Morelos, State of México.
