Avocado oil may have anti-ageing properties like those attributed to olive oil, says a team of scientists from Mexico.
Consumption of olive oil is often associated with low levels of chronic disease in some Mediterranean countries.
Scientists now say that fat pressed from Avocado could also be a potent weapon against conditions like heart disease and cancer, because it combats rogue oxygen molecules in the body.
Rogue oxygen molecules called “free radicals” are one of the prime drivers in ageing, and believed to play a major role in cancer.
These free radicals are natural waste products of metabolism, but may be generated in greater numbers due to factors such as pollution, tobacco smoke and radiation.
A team at the University Michoacana de San Nicolas de Hidalgo in Morelia in Mexico has now shown that avocado oil can be effective against free radicals.
Previous research conducted at Morelia General Hospital had shown that avocado lowers blood levels of cholesterol, and certain fats linked to diabetes.
Speaking at the annual meeting of the American Society for Biochemistry and Molecular Biology, lead researcher Mr Cortes-Rojo, from the University Michoacana de San Nicolas de Hidalgo in Mexico, said: “We'll need to confirm that what has been observed in yeasts could occur in higher organisms, such as humans.”
