The Mexican Red Cross is responding around the clock to widespread flooding in the southern portion of their country. More than 1,000,000 people have been affected by Hurricanes Manuel and Ingrid. An estimated 40,000 tourists had been stranded in Acapulco after landslides have blocked the city from the airport.
The Mexican Red Cross has activated all of their branches and deployed more than 7,200 volunteers to assist those affected by the devastating weather last week. Rapid response teams trained in search and rescue have been deployed and are providing first aid, assistance in evacuation, damage assessment and emotional support to impacted areas.
Supply centers have been opened with stocks of cleaning, hygiene, and relief supplies in multiple locations. Nearly 67 tons of relief supplies have already been distributed in Guerrero.
Other Red Cross societies in Latin American are putting response teams on standby, holding coordination meetings, checking communications systems and activating contingency plans. The American Red Cross is in close contact with our counterparts at the Mexican Red Cross as they assess their needs, but the Mexican Red Cross has not requested additional support at this time.
At this time, American Red Cross is helping to reconnect families separated by this devastating event. To locate immediate family members (parents, siblings, children, spouses, fiancées, grandparents or legal guardians only) who are not U.S. citizens, please contact the local American Red Cross chapter at (702) 697-1711 to begin the process. The loved ones being sought should have been in regular contact with their relatives in the United States prior to the disaster.
Inquiries concerning U.S. citizens should be referred to the U.S. Department of State, Office of Overseas Citizens Services, at (888) 407-4747.
