As part of a joint promotional effort, Puerto Vallarta and Riviera Nayarit are undertaking a promotional tour from October 23 – 31, which will include their participation in the International Tourism and Travel Show (ITT) in Montreal, the most important travel event in Canada, in order to attract a larger number of tourists from this region. Despite a decline in 2009 due to the financial crisis, the Mexican tourism industry performed well during 2008-2012. Inbound trips to Mexico recovered to register a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 0.52%, and outbound tourist volumes posted a CAGR of 1.09% during the same period.
Tourism in Mexico is a very large industry. Mexico has been traditionally among the most visited countries in the world according to the World Tourism Organization and it is the most visited country in the Americas, after the United States.
The majority of tourists come to Mexico from the United States and Canada. Other visitors come from Europe and Asia. A small number of tourists also come from other Latin American countries.
There is also a burgeoning domestic tourism trade as a growing affluent middle class begins to go on holiday within their own country. While Mexico's middle/lower class usually promotes national tourism, the middle/higher class usually prefers to travel overseas.
Tourism's participation in Mexican gross domestic product will climb 100 basis points to 9.4% through 2018. The "upward trend" for the industry, which employs about 7 million people, will be driven by more visitors from countries outside of North America and better tourism facilities.
