A magnitude 6.0 earthquake off the coast of Chiapas shook southern Mexico at 4:43 p.m. local time (6:43 p.m. ET). That was followed 13 minutes later by a magnitude 4.6 aftershock in the same offshore area. (Three minutes before the aftershock, a magnitude 4.5 struck off Vancouver, Canada.)
Yesterday morning, farther north in Mexico, three moderate quakes ruptured within two hours beginning at 7:43 a.m. local time - magnitude 4.1 and 5.0 quakes off Baja California, followed by the magnitude 5.7 in Michoacan.
