HAVANA - Cuba and Mexico have experienced a relaunch of their friendship and collaboration during the week that has just ended, when the 13th Inter-Parliamentary Meeting between the two nations was held in Havana.

The event, held on May 3-4, took place less than a month after Mexican President Felipe Calderon's official visit to Havana on April 11. Calderon highlighted the role played by parliamentary diplomacy in strengthening those ties.

Before signing the final declaration, Jose Gonzalez, president of the Mexican Senate, told the press that after the meeting, the ties between the two countries will be in a good moment and will recover their historic level.

According to the legislative leader, the meeting was very positive, as it consolidated the friendship and solidarity that have always existed between Cuban and Mexican parliamentarians.

Gonzalez reaffirmed the stance of the Mexican delegation on the U.S.-imposed, over 50-year-old blockade on Cuba, as well as their support for the cause of the five Cuban antiterrorist fighters unjustly held in U.S. prisons since 1998.

The president of the People's Power National Assembly (Cuban Parliament), Ricardo Alarcon, noted that the meeting was characterized by an atmosphere of frankness, fraternity and seriousness, which enabled the two countries could discuss different issues on the agenda.
