You Can Help Clean Up Puerto Vallarta on World Wetlands Day Isabel Cardenas - Fideicomiso Estero el Salado | |
January 18, 2013 |
Hello friends of the Estero,
February 2 is World Wetlands Day and the ANP in collaboration with the Department of Environment and Ecology of Puerto Vallarta, the Commission of Protected Natural Areas (CONANP) and Seapal Vallarta will celebrate this important date with the two planned activities.
World Wetlands Day is celebrated internationally each year on February 2. It marks the anniversary of the signing of the Convention on Wetlands of International Importance (Ramsar Convention) in Ramsar, Iran, on 2 February 1971.
World Wetlands Day was first celebrated in 1997. Since then government agencies, non-government organizations and community groups have celebrated World Wetlands Day by undertaking actions to raise public awareness of wetland values and benefits and promote the conservation and wise use of wetlands.
These activities include seminars, nature walks, festivals, launches of new policies, announcement of new Ramsar sites, newspaper articles, radio interviews and wetland rehabilitation.
The international theme for World Wetlands Day 2013 is "Wetlands - Take Care of the Water."
Wetlands provide important hydrological functions such as groundwater recharge, water quality improvement and flood alleviation. The health of wetlands depends on the quality and quantity of water that reaches them. To secure their conservation and wise use it is essential that they are managed in the wider context of catchment-scale water resource management.
On Friday, February 1, we will begin cleaning of the wetlands (Limpieza de Humedales) at 9:00 am.
We will meet at Estero El Salado on Francisco Medina Ascencio, which is across from the Naval Hospital.
It is recommended to wear comfortable casual clothing, tennis shoes and a cap.
On Saturday, February 2, will be a Rally of the wetlands and water management.
We will meet at 9:00 am on the Rio Cuale Island, downtown Vallarta.
Contestants will be participating from our local secondary schools.
We invite you to participate in the activities.
