Introducing Dra. Eva Torres
Dra. Eva with the rescued crocodile |
Everyone at PuRR Project knows how lucky we are to have the services of a vet who cares so much about each and every feline in the shelter. So what are those caring hands doing down the throat of a 12-foot crocodile??????
Read on……Eva was born in Mexico City and knew as a young girl that she wanted to be a veterinarian. After earning her degree in 2002 at UNAM with a specialty in wild animals, Dr. Eva decided to relocate to Puerto Vallarta to continue her study of reptiles. With it’s large population of crocodiles, Banderas Bay was a good choice!
Working with another vet and biologist, Eva helped form CALEV whose purpose is to rescue, rehabilitate and release animals back to the wild. Estuary otters, iguanas, snakes, turtles, marine birds, falcons and opossums are some of the many animals they have helped.
Last year she went out on a rescue call when a large croc was found on a beach in Nuevo Vallarta and appeared to be dying. It was a female with many defensive wounds and virtually blind, missing one eye and cataracts in the other. The only way to get food and medicine into her stomach was by hand……so Dr. Eva fed her raw chicken weekly. She survived and now lives in the sanctuary at “Cocodrilario El Cora” near Flamingos Golf Course which is open to the public and has a nice restaurant as well.
Dr. Eva is currently excited about the soon to be released Pygmy Owl that was found as a chick and had to be taught to catch mice for his dinner!
Fortunately for us, she has time between rescues and her full-time job at Subuesos Clinic to care for the many felines at the PuRR shelter. She has a special fondness for cats as they were her mother’s favorite animal and there were always cats in their home. So a BIG “Thank You” to our favorite vet from all the volunteers at PuRR!
One of the trees that took down the fence and blocked the road leading to the shelter |
Shelter Update: Storm Damage
On the night of July 11, Jose called to say that a storm moved through the valley with extremely high winds and rain.
Two large trees on the property line had fallen with one coming through the roof of the storage room where the washer/dryer and supplies are located. Rain was pouring in.
The other had fortunately fallen away from the main house but destroyed the fence and was blocking the road.
Power was also out but the family was safe. There was nothing we could do until morning, when George Long hurried out to assess damage and take photos.
We immediately located someone with a gasoline chainsaw to start removing the trees.
Getting the fence rebuilt will be a priority as the cats are now able to get out onto the road and predators can easily get in.
It looks like the cement walls of the bodega are OK but several sections of roofing will have to be replaced. Obviously these will be expensive but necessary repairs. Molly & Alabama in Portland |
Adoption Update: Alabama
It’s been almost two years since Amy & Bill Welch visited the PuRR shelter with Adoption Coordinator Bama Brasseal in October of 2011.
They had already adopted a beautiful calico cat through PEACE (named “Molly” for Molly Fisher) and that day Bill was immediately drawn to another little calico kitty with golden eyes.
They decided on the spot that Molly needed a girlfriend! “Alabama” was soon on her way home to Portland and from this recent photo we can see that she and Molly are now BFFs.
Amy is a tireless volunteer for PEACE and you can learn more about this organization and their efforts to prevent the future suffering of cats and dogs by providing free mobile spay and neuter clinics, primarily in communities throughout the Bay of Banderas (Puerto Vallarta, Mexico).
Upcoming Events: Loteria!!!!
Mark your August calendars for a chance to play the traditional Mexican Loteria and walk away with some really nice prizes…restaurant certificates, jewelry, gift cards, wine and more!
The event will be held at Los Alcatraces Restaurant on Wednesday, August 21st, at 5:00 pm.
They have a great upstairs area complete with full bar and menu service and best of all….air conditioning!!
Los Alcatraces is located just behind COSTCO and is only a block away from bus service on Francisco Villa.
Loteria is played a lot like BINGO but uses traditional Mexican images (sun, moon, palm tree, parrot, scorpion, boraccho man, etc.) instead of numbers so you get to learn a little Spanish while you play….and don’t forget to shout MEOW when you win!
This may be your last chance to get your “BINGO fix” until Kitty BINGO resumes at Nacho Daddy on November 6th, with Broadway crooner Ryan Rigazzi beginning the half-time entertainment for the season.
Featured Feline: Estrella
Estrella gets the A-OK from the vet! |
“Estrella” means STAR in Spanish and this little calico gal is certainly one.
Calico cats are not a specific breed like Siamese or Ragdolls but are named for the pattern on their fur, white with patches of orange and black. (Tortoiseshell cats have the same colors but they blend together in a brindle fashion.)
Part of the genetic anomaly that gives them the distinct coloring also means they are almost always 99.9% female!
You can come meet Estrella and some of the 40 other kittens from our nursery at our weekly Adoption Booth at Plaza Marina, Fridays 11:00-2:00 or contact adopt@purrproject.com for more information.
We will also be at the City Adoptathon by the downtown zocolo on Saturday, July 27th. from 9:00-1:00.
Thanks! Grazie! Merci! Gracias!
We’d like to give a special Thanks to Sherri Narro for the SEVEN big bags of Kirkland Maintenance food she delivered to our adoption booth at Plaza Marina last week. That will feed the adults for a week and is really appreciated!
We invite you to add your charity or supporting organizations' news stories and coming events to PVAngels so we can share them with the world. Do it now!
