Talleres de Identificación de aves / Bird Identification Workshops - SPBO (Luis Morales)

The San Pancho Bird Observatory (SPBO) is developing a program to deliver bird identification workshops using online videos and educational materials at 10 different community centers in the municipalities of Bahía de Banderas and Compostela, Nayarit.

Such workshops are possible thanks to volunteer efforts in each town and the coordination of non-profit organizations, hotels, B & B´s and individuals all over the region.

This project is possible thanks to the contributions and collaboration of individual and corporate donors: Michele and John Gillet, Lynda Gillman, David Mandell, Ursula Trocher, Shannon Rio and Mateo Kirk Gooding, and Amy Schumann. The Banderas Bay Initiative has supported with funding for the creation of educational materials. A heart-felt THANKS to all of you!

SPBO has collected a total of $1151 USD for this project, representing about 7.5% of the total cost...we are going for 100%!!!

Muchísimas gracias a Minerva Zamora y Erik Peñaloza for your support in creating the online videos and educational materials!!!!

We thank the volunteers, Community Centers, rental-home and resorts in Chacala: Cambiando Vidas, Casa de la Tercera Edad, Casa Pacífica, and Majahua Resort Tapas Bar; Bahía de Jaltemba: Centro Comunitario Amigos de Jaltemba, Club Rotario de Bahía de Jaltemba, and teacher Gema Márquez; Lo de Marcos: Casa de los Niños and Mar al Cielo Retreat; San Pancho: EntreAmigos Community Center; San Ignacio; La Casa Clú and Jessica Zepeda; Sayulita: Casa de la Cultura, Grupo Pro-Sayulita and Steve Pomeroy; Higuera Blanca and Punta de Mita: PEACE, and IMANTA resort; Bucerías: Bucerìas´Bilingual Community Center.

It is important to mention that despite these unprecedented collaborations, significant funds are still needed to fuel the Bird ID Workshops program (about 90% of the total funding is still needed). Tax-deductible donations are received both in Mexico and the USA; volunteers and in-kind donations of birding books and equipment are also welcome. For more information please contact SPBO at birdingsanpancho@gmail.com.

Please remember that the sum of many small contributions makes a large difference, you too can be part of this change for bird conservation at the Nayarit coast!!!

We appreciate donations at all times as our needs are ever changing. You can donate online here.

A Truly Heart-touching Story by Luis Morales

A few weeks ago I had my first class at San Ignacio which is our most important and challenging community for the implementation of the Bird ID Workshops program since illegal traffic of wild birds is well-known to occur at this village.

I was surprised to see how knowledgeable some of the older kids, with slingshots around their necks, are; the keenest I have met by far...!

As I was introducing SPBO´s educational program to the kids, I was deeply touched and inspired when a young girl told me that she loved the idea but they had no money to pay for this program. Then she remembered she had 9.50 pesos she could give to our program right away...I told her there was no need that I knew people who care about sponsoring this program for them. Both facts touched me deeply and made me fully convinced that we must conduct this program and gave me the hope that we will accomplish a wide-range long-term effect with it... do you feel we can do it together?
