The thirteenth anniversary of our Estero el Salado, Puerto Vallarta's natural protected area, was celebrated on July 26.

The actual anniversary date is July 27, when the Congress of the State of Jalisco declared the Estero el Salado a protected area in 2000.

Estero el Salado opened their doors last Friday for a free day of enjoying the area and celebrating the 13 years of protecting the area's flora and fauna.

Approximately 675 people attended and were delighted with the various activities associated with environmental education, boat rides through the estuary on the Aventurera and Maclovia, interaction with macaws, young crocodiles, raccoons and much more.

At noon there was an awards ceremony to thank all the individuals, organizations and institutions that have contributed over the past thirteen years in the conservation of the Estero.

The celebration culminated with the release of 850 iguana hatchlings that were born in the UMA reptile Cipactli. The hatchlings were gently handed to the children and adults in attendance with the instruction to give them a name and release them in one of the many trees.

Estero el Salado credits the success of the event was due to the invaluable cooperation of volunteers, sponsors and the media.

Team Angels was lucky to be invited for the celebration and enjoyed a terrific day away from the computers. We thank Isabel and all the crew for a great day. Love the t-shirts!
