The System for the Integral Development of the Family (DIF) of Puerto Vallarta is instrumental in reinforcing the program of community development, starting at the educational levels of the rural municipal communities. Their goal is to support and promote the production of home grown food among vulnerable or at-risk families.

The president of DIF Puerto Vallarta, Magaly Fregoso Ortiz, visited the primary and preschool of the community of El Veladero in Jalisco. She spoke with the students and parents of families about the importance of nutrition and the implementation of home gardens. Their goal is that families produce the fruits and vegetables for their own consumption, since because of the distance necessary to access these, they are limited in their ability to purchase these nutrients.

During her visit, Ortiz went to the orchard sites produced by the schools, thanks to the support of the program coordinator of the Community Development, José Roberto Hernández Cortés, and the instructors of CONAFE (National Council of Formative Educative), as well as with the support of the parents.

This program works in 5 stages to promote the development of self-sustaining projects. This includes: health, nutrition, housing, economy, and education, with projects that are adapted according to the specific community needs. This program has already been implemented in El Cantón, Zancudo, Veladero, Rancho Nácar, and Tebelchía.

Perhaps of most excitement of the visit, Magaly Fregoso listened and responded to the students’ eagerness to get to see the zoo. She committed to support them for access and transportation so that in the next few days they will go on that so awaited zoo trip!

The students received necessities such as backpacks and an assortment of school supplies during the visit. They then presented a thank you letter for the municipal governmental support over which Municipal DIF Director Ramón Guerrero Martínez presides.
