Wild Sea - Eco Wars & Surf Stories from the Coast of the Californias

On February 15, 2012, Punta Sayulita is pleased to host an insightful presentation by Serge Dedina, Co-Founder & Executive Director of Wildcoast/Costasalvaje, an international organization that conserves coastal and marine ecosystems and wildlife.

Serge earned his PhD in geography from the University of Texas and has been surfing since 1977. Serge's presentation will be centered around his newly released book, Wild Sea - Eco Wars & Surf Stories from the Coast of the Californias. Serge is also the author of Saving the Gray Whale: People, Politics, and Conservation in Baja California, also published by the University of Arizona Press.

The Wall Street Journal, Washington Post, New York Times, Christian Science Monitor, Surfer Magazine, USA Today, Los Angeles Times, Chicago Tribune, NBC Nightly News, The Today Show, National Public Radio, CNN, and CBS News have all reported on Serge's coastal conservation activities.

For his role in helping to protect the coastline of the Californias, Serge received the Surf Industry Manufacturer's Association "Environmentalist of the Year" Award, the San Diego Zoological Society's Conservation Medal, and the "Coastal Hero" Award from the California Coastal Commission, and Sunset Magazine.

Following the presentation, Serge will show his 30 minute documentary movie, The Baja Wave Document. The presentation is open to the public with a suggested minimum donation of 100 pesos to support the Punta Sayulita Foundation Environmental Educational Programs.

Evelyne Boren Exhibition

On February 16, 2012, Punta Sayulita is pleased to host a very special intimate evening with internationally acclaimed artist and Sayulita resident, Evelyne Boren. Known for her vibrant watercolors and beautifully textured oils, Evelyne's 4,500 paintings are now on display in private collections around the world.

Meet Evelyne and watch her paint a colorful market scene from beginning to end. Bidding will continue throughout the evening until the painting is finished. All proceeds of the demonstration will go to the Punta Sayulita Foundation's Children Art Program which was founded in 2010 by Evelyne Boren and Punta Sayulita. Also, 10% of all sales of her paintings will go to the Punta Sayulita Foundation.

The exhibition is open to the public with a suggested minimum donation of 100 pesos to support the Punta Sayulita Foundation's Children Art Programs.

Join us at the Punta Sayulita Beach House, Thursday, February 16, 2012, from 6:00 to 8:00 pm.

 

Minds in the Water - Premier Movie Screening

On February 29, 2012, Punta Sayulita is pleased to host the Mexico premier of the new documentary movie, Minds in the Water. The movie's Director, Justin Krumb, will be on hand to present the movie and host a question & answer session following the movie.

Minds in the Water is a feature-length documentary following the quest of professional surfer Dave Rastovich and his friends to protect dolphins, whales and the oceans they all share. Through Dave's journey - a five-year adventure spanning the globe from Australia to the Galapagos, Tonga, California, Alaska and Japan - we see one surfer's quest to activate his community to help protect the ocean and its inhabitants.

Minds in the Water has received a number of important accolades at international film festivals, worldwide. It will be projected in English (sorry, no Spanish subtitles!)

The movie will be shown on a 7 x 10 meter big screen on the beach in front of the Punta Sayulita Beach House. The movie is open to the public with a suggested minimum donation of 100 pesos to support the Punta Sayulita Foundation's Environmental Education Programs.

Bring your beach chair or beach blanket and enjoy the movie under the stars on the beach on Wednesday, February 29, 7:00  pm, next to the Punta Sayulita Beach House (by Don Pedro's).

The event is also a great prelude to the many spectacular events that will take place during the upcoming Third Annual Punta Sayulita Longboard & SUP Classic, March 9 to 11.
