Lindsey and Gaby of the popular Page in the Sun book store, coffee shop and eatery are proud to present Candace George Thompson in her book reading and discussion of "Still Having Fun, a Portrait of the Military Marriage of Rex and Bettie George, 1941-2007."
Air Force Brat Candace George Thompson is the daughter of a career Air Force Officer whose first mission was on D-Day, June 6, 1944. She was born in Kentucky, as were both her parents, and like most service families, hers moved frequently. By the time she started 10th grade, she had changed schools 13 times.
Her essays and stories have been published in several anthologies and she has been interviewed on Military Mom Talk Radio speaking about capturing family memories.
She will be the guest star at Page in the Sun on Thursday, March 6, at 6:00 pm.
In American Military Families, she reflects on why she wrote her book "Still Having Fun."
"When people ask what inspired me to write "Still Having Fun," I tell them the short answer is GRIEF. After both of my parents died in May of 2007, I found solace re-reading my mother’s 1947/48 letters written from Okinawa where my father was stationed after WW II. Before Mother got Alzheimer’s she had mentioned wanting to publish those letters.
When I was cleaning out my parents’ house, I discovered a one-page outline written on a sheet of lined yellow paper in one of her desk drawers. I decided I would take on my mother’s project. Long story short: The little project kept growing, expanding back to my parents’ courtship and my father’s Army Air Corps days. It crept forward in time as I delved into documents and records, navigator logs and travelogues, performance evaluations, weight charts, emails, tax returns and household expense ledgers. My parents, it turned out, led well-documented lives.
At some point I decided I wanted to share their love story with people beyond immediate family, hoping it would entertain, educate and inspire them to live life to the fullest. “Still Having Fun” was published on September 5, 2012, and I’ve been very gratified by the feedback from readers of all ages and backgrounds. They all tell me they’ve fallen in love with Bettie and Rex, so I think I’ve accomplished my goal."
“Still Having Fun” is available for $19.94 (Kindle, $9.99) and can be ordered through the publisher at Westview or at amazon.com or barnesandnoble.com.
