Huichol Festival at Plaza Caracol

March 17, 2012

The Wixárika indigenous community of Tateikie (San Andrés Cohamiata, Mezquitic, Jalisco) will present the seventh edition of this festival in Puerto Vallarta from March 17 to March 31, 2012.

The art and the crafts of the Huichol Indians are world famous.  The word Wixárika means fortune-teller and is used to designate the Huichol, one of the most important Indian groups of Mexico, native to the states of Jalisco and Nayarit.

Entitled "Wixáritari Tateikie 2012", you are invited to open an extraordinary window to experience the Wixárika universe through their art, music and ancestral ceremonies.

The exhibitions and festivities will take in Plaza Caracol daily from 10:00 am until 9:00 pm.

Fifty artists will exhibit their mystical art, showing their fabulous techniques of beads on wax and wood, as well as the beautiful embroidery reflecting their unique ancestry.

In addition to the exhibitions, you can listen to the ancestral music, followed by the popular music of the traditional mariachi Wixárika.

At the opening on Saturday, March 17, at 6:00 pm, attendees can see the ceremony of Patsixa in a valuable exercise for the promotion of the intercultural, religious and linguistic knowledge. On the following two Saturdays, March 24 and March 31, at 6:00 pm, the presentation will continue with the ceremony of Híkuri Neixa (Dance of the Peyote) and Tatei Neixa (Feast of the Drum).

There will also be documentary films to illustrate the lives of the Wixarika people and their customs beginning at 6:00 pm.

Traditional and regional music will be presented daily from 7:00 until 8:00 pm.

Experience the art, traditions, music and food of this indigenous culture, native to the states of Jalisco and Nayarit.

Admission is free from 10:00 am - 9:00 pm at Plaza Caracol in the Hotel Zone on Blvd. Francisco Medina at Km 2.5.
