Last Saturday, I kept overhearing comments about our Market from people who had never been to it before. We are ‘tucked away’ somewhat; not a walk-by location, but it is certainly worth the time to find us. More on that in a bit.
The comments were all positive – the audible ones at least - and they all boiled down to the same basic premise: TIME. It’s something that cannot happen in mid-February, for example. Only during the glory days of summer, nobody is being jostled, Chihuahuas are not being tromped on and the happy chatter is endless and not deafening! Spending TIME choosing the proper kind of bread to serve for your dinner party, being able to ask the baker face-to-face (who has been up and running since 3 a.m.!) what goes with what the best and taking home the freshest and tastiest loaves available in Vallarta.
Ex-pats love our Market because they can come in, try on a shirt woven in Oaxaca and have it taken in by Veronica and ready for next week’s Market. Barbara’s Art to Wear is all hand sewn and painted by her so if you see something you like but need it bigger or smaller she can approximate the design - not duplicate it as they are all one-of-a-kind - but she will get close to the original. And she makes jewelry to accompany and flatter whatever you choose.
Mark, the Pie Guy |
Having your body pampered and smelling fine is important in these days of two-shower-minimums to keep the salt build up away. Take the TIME to go chat with Armando who learned his trade in France. He has branched out to all aspects of skin care from soap-making to mosquito repellant to bath oils that will leave your skin purring with gratitude.
NOBODY wants to cook in this heat! We covered the bread earlier but what if you want to take a picnic to the beach? Say no to hotdogs and really impress your guests by visiting our two Marks. Mark #1 will put together fine fresh cheeses, meats, chicken and then decorate with a variety of pickles and pickled beets for a splendid feast on the sand. Mark #2, our Brit, makes superb pies and tarts and quiches. Try before you buy and don’t forget dessert. Drop some freshly whipped cream into your cooler to top off one of Mark’s fresh fruit pies to share. Or do what I do: put the pie in my fridge, forget to take the whipped cream and eat it all by myself after the beach party is over. They are so good!
Easiest way to get to us every Saturday from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. is to start at Parque Lazaro Cardenas in Old Town Vallarta. Walk up Olas Altas a few blocks (past Andales and Freddy’s Pharmacy) to Pulpito, turn right and we are half a block down, right across from Coco’s Kitchen. See you there every weekend – we are the only Market in all of Banderas Bay brave enough to stay open every Saturday, year ‘round!
