If you are not able to physically adopt a cat and take it home with you, but would like to help, you can also “virtually” adopt a cat for only $120 or a $10 monthly donation! You can either visit our PuRR Project shelter to select the cat you would like to sponsor, pick one of the beautiful residents pictured on our website, or we can select one for you. We will e-mail you periodic updates with photos of your “adopted” feline! You may want to consider the gift of virtual adoption to other cat lovers in your life!
Most of these Virtual Adoption candidates are older cats who will live out their lives in the shelter grounds because they were passed over for adoption as kittens or because they are considered too feral to adjust to being a companion cat. Your sponsorship will help us in our mission to give them a safe place to call home! Click on the link for more information: Virtual Adoption
UPCOMING EVENTS:
We are happy to announce that our event planner has been very busy this summer and we look forward to seeing a lot of familiar faces when the high season begins this Fall! More details coming soon but here’s a preview of some scheduled events:
Saturday, Nov. 6th: Paradise Community Center Saturday Market resumes and we’ll be there with kitties for adoption and lots of PuRR logo items to sell including the new 2015 PuRR Calendars!
Wednesday, Nov. 5th: Another season of Kitty Bingo kicks off. Stay tuned for time & place!
Sunday/Monday, Nov. 9/10: Garage Sale in the Marina to benefit the kitties.
PLUS: Our 2nd Annual Pig Roast/Luau at the Sea Monkey on Los Muertos Beach, the Unisex Fashion Show & Bruch at Daiquiri Dick’s and more too-much-fun Adult BINGO at the Palm!
ADOPTION UPDATE:
In August, we took in a total of 17 kittens from various sources, including a box of four 2-3 week old Siamese type babies that were left in a box at the gate. Kittens this young cannot survive without a mother cat or someone to bottle feed and massage them them every four hours or so. In these cases we have to find a volunteer to take on this task as we simply do not have the resources to do it at the shelter. The survival rate for these young ones is not good, but fortunately these seem to have been well nourished and so far three have survived.
The good news is that we had a total of 12 adoptions in August which is not bad for this time of year! Our regular adoption booth at Plaza Marina on Friday from 11-2 is the source of most of these adoptions. But we also had special visitors to the shelter in August who were looking for two kitties to join their family (which already included two rather large but sweet dogs!). So Kim & John McKindle went back home to El Nogalito with “Sammy Lou” and “Inka”. Kim reports that after 4 weeks the felines and canines are basically ignoring each other and all is well at Rancho McKindle! Meow!
SHELTER NEWS:
“When is rains, it POURS!” Never a dull day in the tropics during the summertime months when it is not unusual to get 5-8 inches of torrential rain in a brief thunderstorm. This means the brush & weeds & insects grow like crazy!! We recently discovered some serious termite damage to doors & ceiling beams in the main casita and work has begun to repair it. An exterminator was brought in to find & remove the termite nests and also clear the army ant nests found when we cleared growth behind the house. The termites build huge nests in the crooks of trees and eventually kill the tree as well as do damage to any wood they can find. We have to be careful to use only kid and cat-friendly pesticides in the process of course!
In addition, new roofing in the nursery and special needs casitas has been installed that was necessary to prevent the almost nightly flooding. Thanks to a couple of anonymous donors and advance sales of our 2015 calendars, we have funds to cover a good portion of the cost. Thank goodness summer is almost over and we look forward to some great fundraising events coming up!
GRACIAS! THANKS! MERCI!
We were recently contacted by Marcela Virgen of Dupont Pioneer, saying the company wanted to give a donation to PuRR Project. A little research showed us this company is headquartered in Des Moines, Iowa, and has a facility in Valle de Banderas that provides research and agronomic support to increase farm productivity in Mexico and other countries. According to Marcela, they also RECYCLE plastic containers, glass, paper, aluminum & scrap metal and donate the proceeds to local non-profits. Great idea!!
A Purr volunteer met the reps from Pioneer at the recycle company near Mescales (now we know where to recycle old kitchen appliances - what a place!) and along with three other local non-profits, received a $1,000 peso donation which is very much appreciated this month. Thanks Marcela & Rosy!
