The Mismaloya icon and landmark of this destination became the sixth certified beach, confirming Puerto Vallarta as the town with more certified beaches in Mexico.

On Friday, the interim mayor Javier Pelayo Mendez received the certification from Luis Alarcón Hernández Núñez, representing the Mexican Institute of Standardization and Certification recognition and flag symbolizing certification of Mismaloya as a clean and safe beach.

During his participation Javier Pelayo was found to be a man who prefers anecdotes to speeches and expressed emotion for the thrill of being part of the historical development of Mismaloya to spearhead the growth of tourism in Puerto Vallarta.

He stressed that certification of Mismaloya Beach is an effort by all and especially of the local community.

He recalled his participation as an assistant in the filming of the movie "The Night of the Iguana" starring Richard Burton, a film that ultimately would promote Puerto Vallarta worldwide. He worked as a salesman in his youth, knows the locals and thanked the efforts of each family and the Hotel Barceló who participated in the cleanliness of the beach.

Meanwhile, Luis Alarcón Hernández Núñez, representative of the Mexican Institute of Standardization and Certification, said the certificate awarded to Mismaloya is under the rule that "establishes the requirements and specifications of sustainability and quality of beaches" including required services, safety, sustainability, and quality of the water.

Participants were invited to continue the work in maintaining this effort in the sustainability and beach quality to benefit the community and individual citizens who come to enjoy Mismaloya and increase the influx.

Rodolfo Pacheco, President of the Hotel Association of Puerto Vallarta & Bay of Banderas and Director of the Hotel Barceló, said that the hotel community is in favor of the initiative by the municipality to get more beaches certified for the benefit of the destination.

Mismaloya joins five other certified beaches: Holi, Camarones, Amapas-Conchas Chinas, Palmares and Garza Blanca.

The team has been working for nearly two years in achieving the specifications required by the institute to grant this recognition.

The certification includes keeping the public beach clean, the constant improvement of water quality, increased safety, signage, and thus be more attractive for tourists visiting this beach.

Personal de Ecologia conducts tours two or three times a week and includes the continued monitoring of water quality where samples are tested every 15 days.
