Driving in Puerto Vallarta and Mexico in general is a bit different from the U.S. or Canada. To make it easier to understand how people drive, I have pointed out some facts about situations you can find while driving:

•  Highways are marked in kilometers, not miles. (1 Mile = 1.6 Kilometers)

•  The amount of personal space is also different, it may not be right but it is different.

•  It's not unusual for the driver ahead of you to attempt a left turn from the right lane, or vice-versa.

•  You can find the classic "pusher", a driver that gets really close to your back while driving, no matter what the circumstances are.

•  Slow traffic is NOT always on the right lane.

•   Some times Highways, large roads or street roads do not have lane markers. Many times it makes more sense to pay more attention to cars to the left and right of you than those in front and behind you.

•  Don't assume or expect the car ahead of you to have working brake lights. Sometimes they work, sometimes they don't.

•  If you are driving in a rural area or away from a city, keep an eye out for debris on the road. This may be road kill, tire shreds or other kind of garbage. This is a good reason why it's best not to drive at night if you don't know the area.

•  On a good note: Mexico's "Green Angels" (Angeles Verdes) are professional mechanics who travel the nation's highways in their green trucks and their job is to assist travelers whose vehicles have broken down. They charge for auto parts or gasoline, but the service they provide is free (paid by the government). It doesn't hurt to leave a tip, but that's completely voluntary.

Most importantly, while driving in Puerto Vallarta or Mexico in general; be prepared to be surprised and enjoy the ride!
