Fact of the month
Domestic violence in Mexico is a social problem. Men believe that they have the right to treat their women as they wish. Women all too often accept this belief. Among married women or women living in a relationship 73.8% did not report incidents of domestic violence because they felt that it was either not important or that their partner would not change. In the situation of a women suffering domestic violence at the hands of her ex spouse or ex partner 49.4% refused to report the incident citing the same reasons.
The Last Two Months
Maybe some people noticed that I didn't send out a newsletter last month. It's not that nothing has been going on. We have been very busy, but there are just things that we cannot talk about.
First the bad news. We did not get the Mexican federal grant that we hoped to get. Sadly a lady that we know who received 3 1/2 million pesos 3 years ago from the same grant was awarded another grant this year. She sets up everything as if she is operating a shelter for battered women and then pockets the money and the “shelter” that opened up to receive the funds then closes. I guess it's nice to have corrupt friends in high places. Hard to believe, but that's how things go down here. OK enough complaining.
A very sad piece of news, my car which we have been using as our only means of transportation caught on fire a few days ago! Anybody have a vehicle that they would like to donate for a good tax write off?
Last month the board members for Compassion for the Family/Vida Reavivida attended a 3 day workshop on domestic violence in Tepic. It was very educational and free! Thank you to our dear friends at the Secretary of Health.
We have a director for the shelter!!! Our new director, Blanca will start working with us full time in July. In the meantime she is donating her time and talents on weekends until she starts full time. What a blessing.
The shoe fits. One of our ladies is the proud owner of one of the pairs of sandals worn by one of the men who participated in the first “what a drag” fund raising event. Used one time.
There is a baby due in less than 2 weeks! Yikes!!!
Lots of pretty curtains going up in the shelter. One of our board members is sewing all the curtains! I got to put up the curtain rods.
No Upcoming Events are Scheduled.
