On Friday, the Centro de Acopio Animal Shelter of Puerto Vallarta celebrated the donation of 950,000 pesos which is equivalent to five tons of food for cats and dogs, as well as the construction of 22 new cage enclosures.

During the opening ceremony of the 12 cages for up to two dogs and 10 additional animal cages, the Director of Acopio, Guadalupe Dávalos, thanked the support of regular volunteers Deb and Greg Barzelou, who generously contributed 250,000 pesos towards the construction.

"We want to give our thanks and love for Greg and Deb and their great love for animals who asked us what we needed in order to change the situation for the animals. Some dogs were tied to trees so up to 24 dogs can be housed in the 12 cages and the other 10 single cages are intended for the confinement of the animals and post surgical treatments. We very much appreciate the efforts of Deb and Greg as they also pitched in on the effort of completing the new construction," said Guadalupe Dávalos.

Meanwhile, Guadalupe Anaya, representing Javier Pelayo, Acting Mayor, thanked the efforts made by each of the volunteers and the time they devote to each of the animals found in the animal shelter and said that they will continue working together with all those who want to join to give a better quality of life to every puppy or kitten there.

In addition to the additional housing for the animals, five tons of food was donated by a laboratory which is equivalent to about 700,000 pesos. This super premium grade of animal food is normally distributed exclusively by veterinarians.

"The laboratory that manufactures the food supports the work of various groups with these donations but cannot support all the organizations that submit applications, so they must prioritize to establish who needs help the most. After receiving a visit, the representatives realized what important work we are doing and the significant changes we are making in the lives of the animals, so we feel extremely privileged to be chosen as the beneficiary," explained Guadalupe Dávalos.

At present, there are 65 dogs and 36 cats at the Shelter, of which approximately 60 percent are ready for adoption and their forever home. The other 40 percent are either too young to be adopted, not yet sterilized or are receiving medical treatment.

We invite the public to take a tour of our facility and welcome all volunteers and donations. We always need food, medicines, antibiotics, analgesics and dewormers.
