To celebrate its twenty-first anniversary of promoting Mexican culture and Puerto Vallarta in the world, the Ballet Folklorico Xiutla announces a series of activities to commemorate their birthday.
On Monday July 27, at 6:30 pm, the annual photograph will be taken with more than 200 members that currently make up the group, in the atrium of the La Divina Providencia church in Aurora, the site where they also performed the Mass of thanksgiving.
At 8:30 pm in the courtyard of City Hall, in downtown Puerto Vallarta by the Malecon arches, the Ballet Folklorico Xiutla will perform for the general public with dances representative of Guerrero, Durango, Yucatan, Chiapas, Veracruz and Jalisco.
It was July 27, 1994, in the CECATUR auditorium, where thirty children and youth took the stage for the first time to begin a path that already exceeds two decades.
The genesis of Xiutla is due to the efforts and tenacity of Professor Carlos Enrique Barrios Limón who decided to live in Puerto Vallarta after a prolific career in dance as a commissioner for the Agency for Promotion of Culture and with the support of municipal government, managed to instill a love of Mexican folklore to children and young people forming a solid project that has taken root in the heart of Vallarta.
Knowing that he was forming an institution that would represent Puerto Vallarta, Professor Barrios named the group with the name of the region to the arrival of the Spaniards: Xiutla.
The Ballet Folklorico Xiutla has conducted national tours for over fifteen states; seven international routes through San Francisco, Seattle, Washington, Chicago, to name some cities in the United States; and South America: Buenos Aires, Cordoba, Argentina; La Paz, Bolivia and Santiago; In Europe, Xiutla has performed in Paris, France; Madrid, Gijon, La Coruna and Barcelona, Spain.
The students of Professor Barrios also visited Asia: Beijing and Shanghai in China.
The Ballet Folklorico Xiutla is known for its extensive repertoire, covering all regions of Mexico. The effort has been rewarded many times with national and international awards, among which are: Gold Medal Award "Rafael Zamarripa" Fiestas de Octubre, Guadalajara, 1999; "Ambassadors of Art and Goodwill," Mesoamerican University of Puebla, 2000; "Vallarta Award in Art", 2003; "Premio Emilio Rabasa" Cultural Department of Tuxtla Gutierrez, Chiapas, 2004; "National Dance Award," DGETI, Toluca; also, as a special mention, the life-size piece of sculpture in honor of the Ballet Folklorico Xiutla, designed by American artist Jim Demetro, was installed in the Puerto Vallarta Malecon II.
With more than 1,700 performances in its history, Xiutla Folkloric Ballet is a valuable asset to the culture of Vallarta and all of Mexico.
