Greenpeace Ship Esperanza to Visit Puerto Vallarta with Guided Tours
Sea Shepherd captures rare footage of elusive Vaquita during first sighting since 2013 (Sea Shepherd Conservation Society)
The Esperanza, Greenpeace's ship that has been fighting the killing of Vaquita Porpoises in the Gulf of California, will be in Puerto Vallarta from August 21 to 25, 2015.
The Esperanza will be docked in the Maritime Terminal Facilities at Pier 3 and will be offering three days of guided tours to the public during their five day visit.
Greenpeace has refitted the ship in as environmentally friendly way as possible and these improvements include: the removal or safe containment of all asbestos; fitting a special fuel system to avoid spillage; newly fitted, more efficient, diesel electric propulsion; on board recycling of waste water, leaving only clean water pumped overboard; a waste based heating system; bilge water purifiers,15 times more effective than current legislation demands; TBT-free hull paint; ammonia based refrigeration and air-conditioning rather than climate changing and ozone depleting Freon gas - the first Dutch registered vessel to be so fitted; and an environmentally and economically efficient propulsion system to reduce CO2 emissions.
Locals and tourists in Puerto Vallarta will tour the ship including visiting the helipad and Command Center.
The Esperanza has participated in several protests and the Earth Summit in Johannesburg and has documented the impact of fishing fleets on the African coast and beyond with the campaign of "Defending Our Oceans."
The Esperanza is headquarted in Mazatlan, Sinaloa, where she will return on August 25.
