A total of fifty sea turtles were found floating in the ocean or on sand beaches in Puerto Vallarta, according to Subdirector of Municipal Ecology, Juan José Navarro Amaral.

As of Sunday afternoon, he said, fifty dead turtles had been located, of which 22 were of the species known as Prieta (Brown), 14 Carey and two Ridley.

The official said it appears "the animals do not show signs of damages from human activities, such as fishing equipment."

Tissue samples have been taken and are being sent to a laboratory for verification by the Federal Attorney for Environmental Protection (Profepa) in order to know "the causes of mortality or a diagnosis of possible metabolic diseases." Results are expected to be received within a week.

Finally he said that ground crews were formed to address the reports and capture organisms that are floating in the sea and may be stranded on the Jalisco coast.

It is presumed that more animals have been found on beaches in the region.
