Sunday Dinners in La Cruz

Sunday Dinners in La Cruz is in full swing.

Last week was Black Forest, this week is La Cava. Dinner starts at 6:00 pm. No RSVP. No pre-set meals.

Linda Ward promises to keep us all informed as to the next location. Last week 22 people were at Sunday dinner - let's pack the restaurant this week at La Cava and show our support for La Cruz restaurants that count on the locals to stay open in the summer.

Update: The next three weeks are confirmed, we hope you'll join us at 6:00 pm:
• Sun, July 31 - La Escalera (former Coleguita's by the Alamar)
• Sun, Aug 7 - Oso's Oyster Bar
• Sun, Aug 14 - Octopus's Garden

For more information about the Sunday Dinners, please email Linda Ward at lindawardinmexico@gmail.com.

Give a special "thank you" to La Cava waiter Jorge who has been Lina Bureau's volunteer in picking up the recycling and garbage throughout the pueblo. Lina said Jorge is always smiling, joyful and teaching her Spanish at the same time.

New Business and Construction

It was slow-going through Bucerias today, Hwy 200 was getting restriped in anticipation of the opening of the new Chedraui.

Rumor has it that the grocery store opens on Thursday, July 28. This Chedraui is said to cater to gringos with an enlarged gourmet section.

And in case you're wondering, the CMQ Hospital is coming along - exterior being painted now.

And the new flyover in Mezcales is progressing quickly as well, cement columns are now being poured.

The times they are a changing.

Summer School Update

Under the able leadership of Mayra Franco and Ernesto Alfaro, 60+ students from ages 4 to 14 are enrolled in a 3-week summer school, sponsored by Amigos and held at Cetmar in La Cruz.

You may know Mayra and her husband Jason, and their partner Pia, who six years ago started and presently run the Mercado Huanacaxtle (La Cruz Sunday Market). This nonprofit company is responsible for creating the La Cruz Skate Park, with visions of rebuilding the community volleyball court and constructing a Community Center. In their "spare" time, Mayra and Jason run a boat maintenance company. To contact them, email is mercadohuanacaxtle@gmail.com and telephone is (329) 295-5988. Their Mercado Huanacaxtle office is next to the paper store on Coral in La Cruz.

Ernesto is on staff at Cetmar, the local vocational-technical high school in La Cruz.  At Cetmar, he teaches swimming and lifesaving/rescue skills. He has rounded-up three able volunteers from Tepic to help with summer school. These teenagers have worked with Ernesto for the past four to six years in coordinating summer school.  The teens have relatives that live in La Cruz, where they can take up residence during their stay.

Students are rotated through different programs each day, which include dance (pop, rock & roll, modern, and ronda); art with recycled materials; writing; swimming; and sports (soccer, basketball, volleyball, and recreational games).

The culminating event will be an evening performance held on the last day of camp, Friday, August 5. Arms are being twisted now to request Valle to set up a stage, and chairs for parents and community members to view the students' performance at the town square. More information to follow.

PS:  One group of students will be dancing to Michael Jackson's "Thriller." Should be very fun!
