The Secretariat of Public Education (SEP) in Jalisco reported that today, Monday, August 20, will start the 2012-2013 school cycle.

It is expected that 75,000 students in the Northern coast region of Jalisco and up to 100,000 students of Banderas Bay will return to the classrooms.

Puerto Vallarta students return to the more than one hundred schools in two shifts and will be received by almost 3 thousand teachers who have prepared courses for this week.

The delegate of DERSE in the region, Nestor Tello, reported that there will be no new schools in the city but there will be some new classrooms. Since the demand has increased so much in recent years, there are 12 new classrooms planned to be built divided between six schools that should be completed within the next couple months in the Northern region and the municipalities of Puerto Vallarta, Tomatlán and Cabo Corrientes.

At the national level, there will be 27.5 million students and 1.2 million of pre-primary, primary and secondary level teachers, as well as student teachers.

It was reported in a statement that there are more than 234 thousand public and private schools throughout the country, as well as the 15.8 thousand technical, professional and high school campuses, and more than seven thousand institutions of higher education.

The school year will end on July 5, 2013, in accordance with the school calendar. The students will have two holiday periods: the first starts on December 20, 2012, and will conclude on January 6, 2013, and the second from March 25 to April 7, 2013.

The school calendar also shows the following "days off": November 2, November 19, February 4, March 18, May 1 and May 15. It is contemplated that September 17 and May 6 will also be included.

During the ceremony of the classes starting, President Felipe Calderón Hinojosa will recognize the merit of teachers based on the achievement of their students and to deliver stimuli regarding quality teaching to teachers, managers and support staff in basic and special education.

The school community evaluation pre-registration period will take place the first two weeks of February, 2013, and the National Evaluation Week will be held from June 3-7, 2013.
