The Bahía de Banderas Hotel and Motel Association (AHMBB) and the Riviera Nayarit Convention and Visitors Bureau (CVB) have joined the collection efforts of the Nayarit State Government to help families in need after the heavy storms caused by hurricane Willa.

A collection center opened in Nuevo Vallarta on Wednesday to collect basic supplies to be sent to victims of the hurricane. The center is housed in FIBBA, located on Paseo de los Cocoteros s/n.

The Hotel Association of the Municipality of Compostela is also collecting items in their offices at Avenida Sol #1 in Rincón de Guayabitos.

A collection center in Tepic has been opened in the de la Cruz ex-convent located on Calzada del Ejército at Avenida México.

Affected Areas

According to information from the Nayarit State Government, hurricane Willa hit the northern portion of the state causing heavy rains in the area; the San Pedro and Acaponeta rivers are running extraordinarily high, threatening the nearby towns.

“At this time the National Water Commission is reporting flooding in some neighborhoods and communities in Acaponeta and the Tecuala county seat, as well as in Ruiz, Tuxpan, San Vicente, and other nearby communities.

“There are public workers from all three branches of the government serving in the area along with work crews, heavy machinery, and vehicles working round the clock with the sole purpose of saving lives.

“The State Governor has ordered the evacuation of at risk areas and has asked for the support of the Federal Government, the Military, and the Governor from the neighboring state of Jalisco. They have already responded and are sending in help by air and by sea with personnel qualified in emergency management.”

There is a request for donations from the community of the following items:

•Bottled water
•Clothing in good condition
•Cots and blankets
•Medication
•Supplies for babies
•Cleaning supplies
•Personal hygiene supplies
•Pet food

The community is being asked to pay close attention to the advisories and follow the recommendations issued by the authorities.

“This is the time for all of us to come together,” said Governor Antonio Echevarría García. “Our brothers and sisters need us; let us work together as a team to help them.”
