The Puerto Vallarta community showed impressive support for Corazón de Niña, a local children’s shelter, at an event hosted by the Puerto Vallarta Young Professionals Organization (YPO).
The "Non-Event Event" was the brainchild of YPO members Ray Drew and Sue Keevil, and YPO administrator, Shantel d’Auteuil, after being contacted by Corazón de Niña director, Melissa Canez, early last week with a plea for emergency funding to provide the shelter with food and medical care for the month of October.
"We decided to host an emergency call for resources with a "non-event." No speeches, no need to get dressed up, no silent auction...just an invitation for some of our friends and YPO members to come down to Cheeky Monkey last Saturday evening, enjoy some cheap drinks and fun company, and donate whatever they could into the collection jar for Corazón de Niña," says Ray Drew. "We didn't think there was time for planning a real event because the situation was so desperate but we thought we could raise 6,000 pesos - maybe 10,000, if we were lucky - by doing this.”
But YPO members took to Facebook en masse, not only sharing the event and the need for emergency funds with local Puerto Vallarta contacts, but with friends, families and clients worldwide. Money was collected for the event from all over Mexico, the United States, Canada, Switzerland, Ecuador, England and Taiwan with 100,800 pesos raised in time for the Saturday event and with more donations still arriving currently.
"We're very appreciative that our YPO members were so generous and able to access funds from around the world for Corazón de Niña, helping to raise over 100,000 pesos in just 48 hours for this amazing cause," states Shantel d’Auteuil, "and, we encourage everyone to continue to donate and support Corazón de Niña which is a registered charity entirely dependent on private donations."
