The 'Operating Breathalyzer' program continues to have successful results in helping to rid the Banderas Bay highways of drivers under the influence of alcohol.

Municipal President of Banderas Bay, Rafael Cervantes Padilla, indicated that the breathalyzer checkpoints will continue in order to educate motorists about this problem.

The past weekend was a prime example of how well this program is working. The operation began at 11:30 pm on Friday and continued until 4:30 pm on Saturday.

As a result, 28 drivers were found to have alcohol levels which exceeded the allowed limits in the blood. These vehicles were impounded and two of the drivers were arrested that, in addition to driving under the influence of alcohol, became aggressive with the authorities.

José Ramón Álvarez Arreola, Municipal Transit Dispatch Officer, carried out the checkpoint surveillance, along with the Operational Director, Manuel de Jesús Quezada, including coordination with the Municipal Police and medical personnel of DIF (System for the Full Development of the Family).

One of the purposes of 'Operation Breathalizer" ('Operativo Alcoholímetro') is to reduce the number of car accidents, many of which are originated by the ingestion of alcohol and driving while intoxicated, thus for the safety of the driver and others.

For your own safety, and the safety of others, it would be a good idea to leave your car at home if you are planning to enjoy some cocktails and don't have a designated driver. The hotel, restaurant or your host can call a taxi if there is not one handy.
