Over the last few years, two Rotary Clubs in the Vancouver area have put together volunteers and funds to make life better for needy Mexican families in the Puerto Vallarta area.
Charlie Bishop of the Rotary Club of Vancouver said $5,000 in seed money from his club eventually grew into $22,000 in matching funds and other gifts, and went to provide a clean water system for four Puerto Vallarta-area villages.
Now, his wife, Patti Bishop, has led her Rotary Club of Greater Clark County to ante up another $5,000 for more water projects.
Charlie Bishop said the couple spends about half of each year in Mexico and has learned firsthand that many children miss lots of school because of waterborne illnesses.
Meanwhile, the Vancouver club has also leveraged $3,500 into $17,000 for school uniforms and shoes for children.
"Rotary does everything it can to help kids stay in school," he said.
