MEXICO CITY – Family Development Agency (DIF) Consultative Council President Angélica Rivera has inaugurated a campaign to make sure Mexican children get their birth certificates.

During a press conference at the Los Pinos presidential residence, the first lady announced that the campaign will operate nationwide and work with local and state vital records offices.

Rivera said that one in three children do not receive birth certificates before their first birthday. She added that the process will be free.

Birth certificates are often required to obtain official identification or to apply for a job.

“We are a great team to protect the rights of children, (and give them the right) to have a birth certificate from the moment they are born,” Riviera said after signing an agreement with the Interior Secretariat (Segob) to put the program into effect.

Interior Secretary Miguel Osorio Chong said that giving birth certificates to children is important as it grants them an identity and nationality and allows them to establish ties with their families.
