Miss Conception, a whirlwind of great show tunes! |
Kitty BINGO:
It was a wild couple of BINGO nights in February with Miss Conception providing the half-time entertainment to a packed house at Nacho Daddy!
Her shows at The Palm have won her many new Vallarta fans, but she has countless titles, including Miss Gay Universe, Miss Gay Toronto, Miss Canada Continental and Entertainer of the Year!
Because so many folks have asked for it, Nacho Daddy has asked PuRR to provide Wednesday night BINGO every week through March.
Mikki Prost is all set for our final night on Wedbesday, March 27.
Kathleen Palmer will call the numbers and as always, lots of goodies to win when you get a BINGO and shout MEOW!!
Plus the 50/50 Raffle on steroids and an extra card for bringing an item of clothing for the PuRR account at Deja New!
The fun starts at 6:00 pm at Nacho Daddy on Basilio Badillo #180 in Old Town Vallarta.
Pam & Marilyn with the Feb. 20th shelter visitors |
Shelter News:
I happened to be out at the shelter on February 20 when several cars arrived in a cloud of dust and all sorts of folks began pouring in through the main gates. Yikes!! An invasion? No, just Pam Sullivan’s weekly group of locals and visitors to our Bay who needed a little "cat time!"
And the cats were certainly ready for a little "people time" by the looks of the crowd of furries waiting just inside.
Of course, it doesn't hurt that treats and toys usually arrive with the visitors! By the time you are reading this, we'll have only a couple of days left of official Shelter Tours, which end March 27.
PuRR will REALLY miss Pam as she has been the PuRR-fect person to organize tours this season. She promises to resume her duties as official Cat Guide in October. In the meantime, you can always contact us at visit@purrproject.com to work out a convenient time to visit the ranch with one of our other volunteers.
Speaking of dust, we extend a big THANKS to George Long for his help in finally getting the tarps put up inside the fences along the roads on two sides of the shelter. Jose says it really helps keep out the dust and also adds some privacy from the public. Meow!
Jack at home in Puerto Vallarta, Mexico |
Adoption Update Jack Sparrow:
When this poor kitten came to our shelter he had a severe infection in both eyes. Our vet tried his best to treat and save them, but eventually it became clear that one would have to be removed.
He was in our clinic for a long time but never lost his personality, always reaching out a paw to make contact with anyone who walked by.
Local resident and cat lover Maria O'Connor had already seen photos and heard of his struggle from a volunteer and soon declared "That's going to be MY cat!!!"
So as soon as he recovered, off he went to explore his new home where he now lives with his gang of other rescues (Rasputin, Beauregard, Sherman, Blue, Harry, Iota, Arturo, Bunchy, Ten & Oliver).
Quickly named Jack Sparrow by Maria, he has tried to live up to his name by being fearless & funny. Maria says "Jack is the sweetest most huggable cat in the world – he is better than a pillow!"

Good Meows!
On Saturday, February 16, the city of Puerto Vallarta held their very first "ADOPTATHON" event on the veranda of the old City Hall downtown next to the zocalo.
All local animal charities were invited to participate and of course we said YesYesYes!!!
Livia and Marilyn arrived early to get set up for the 9:00 opening and by 1:00 we had three lucky kitties who had found their Forever Homes: Huey, Dewey and Dario.
There were also two adoptions the day before at Plaza Marina so it was a PuRR-fect weekend for our volunteers and kitties alike.
There is talk of another city-sponsored event so we are crossing our fingers (and paws) that it will happen.

Brenda at the Cat Sanctuary at Torre Argentina in Rome |
I never expected to have a cat……my family never had one and I don't even remember knowing anyone who had cats as a child.
So it was a complete surprise to myself when at the age of forty-something, I let the tiny tabby female who appeared on my doorstep come into my apartment and my life.
I named her "Maui" and though prettier kitties would someday find their way into our home, she was my first and so was my special one.
Eleven years later, I was having a final dinner with friends in one of the piazzas in Rome after a much needed vacation. They had already heard the bad news and did not want me to arrive back in Vallarta without knowing that Maui had passed away, so they though it best to just tell me. It came as another complete surprise to me how grief stricken I was and the fellow diners at surrounding tables surely thought some family member had died……and I suppose one had.
Still in tears the next morning, I decided to go with my friend Brenda in search of some of the city's famous cats.
Roman gatto sunning in the ruins where Julius Caesar met his death |
In the heart of old Rome, sunken 20 feet below modern street level and the city's chaotic traffic, lies the Lago di Torre Argentina.
This archaeological oasis contains ruins of 4 ancient temples and the site where Julius Caesar was betrayed in 44 BC.
An estimated 250 cats now call it home and on any given afternoon, a small crowd gathers here to watch them sunbathe on ancient pillars and tumbled steps.
They are cared for by volunteers who have built a clinic in an old underground storage room at one end of the site. The organization cares for sick or wounded cats and has an extensive spay/neuter program to keep the feral population in check.
Most of the permanent residents have special needs – they are blind or missing legs or came from abusive homes. We met many of them and then visited the little gift shop to make a donation and left with smiles on our faces as we headed back home to Mexico……where we soon discovered the PuRR Project and started their adoption program!
Unfortunately, the city is now trying to evict the volunteers. For more information on their fight to keep the sanctuary open, go to Roman Cats or GOOGLE "Torre Argentina."
Thank you so much for your interest in the PuRR project!
We are thankful for supporters like YOU who believe in no-kill cat shelters like ours!
You'll see how well adjusted our kitties are thanks to YOUR donations and volunteering to visit them! PuRRRRRR!!!
We invite you to add your charity or supporting organizations' news stories and coming events to PVAngels so we can share them with the world. Do it now!
