Since the beginning of the Vallarta Yacht Club Jr Sailing Program, sail training has focused on Optimist boats.
Times change, graduating young sailors need a new level of training, and ... why leave all the fun to the kids?
Adults now can participate in the new, expanded VYC Sailing Program. Under the guidance of Dan Green, Jr Sailing Director, the program changes will be exciting.
This fall, the VYC will be offering Basic Sailing lessons for adults. And not in tiny Opti's, but 28-35 foot keel sailboats (wow!).
In August and September, the first 2 weekends lessons will be held. During those same 2 weeks, Freestyle sailing will be available for junior sailors on Opti's, Lasers and Windsurf boards.
The Jr Sailing classes are also expanding. Recently the VYC acquired 4 Lasers and 1 Zuma. Soon, 3 Windsurf boards will be added to the fleet, with 4 different sized sails.
This means the VYC is actively recruiting sailing students up to and including 18 years old. Also, starting June 1st, all Jr Sailors will have lessons twice a week. Previously, Beginner classes were once weekly.
Summer Camp is gearing up too, scheduled in July:
• July 8-12 - Windsurf lessons for Beginners
• July 15-19 - Opti + Laser for Beginners
• July 22-26 - Opti, Laser, Windsurf for Intermediate and Advanced
In September, normal Jr Sailing lessons resume with a few surprises in store.
The VYC plans to create a Junior Commodore position, and one of the students will be elected or appointed.
Stay tuned, it will be a great summer and fall for the VYC Sailing Program!
