Huichol Art from Sayulita Gallery to be Showcased in Nevada City The Union

Local artists in Nevada City, Eileen Blodgett and Liz Collins, are proud to announce the upcoming appearance and talks by Susana Valadez, who is the director of the Huichol Center for Cultural Survival in the Sierra Madre Occidental Mountains of Mexico.

As part of Blodgett and Collins’ art retreat in Sayulita, Mexico, last spring, Susana Valadez graciously led an impelling talk about Huichol art and the plight of the Hucihol culture in the modern world.

Moved by her talks, the women invited Valadez to appear in Nevada City — to tell the Huichol story and to show their beautiful art and crafts, including intricate bead work, masks and colorful yarn paintings.

The artwork of this shamanic culture is a reflection of its native spirituality, which dates back to Aztec times.

The endangered Huichol tribe is supported by the sale of jewelry and art, which promotes cultural sustainability and the conservation of ancient traditions.

On Friday, Valadez will be hosted by the Earth Store, 310 Broad Street, as part of the Nevada City Art Walk. She will also appear at the Nevada City Farmers Market Saturday morning, followed by a presentation and talk at 1:00 pm at the Historic Powell House on 203 Spring St.

Blodgett and Collins said they are thrilled to have made this connection with the Huichol Center and hope that Valadez’s message can be heard by many.
