From McCleary to New York to Mexico and back again, Brittany Kingery of Olympia, has decided to make Bucerias in Nayarit, Mexico, her new permanent home.

“Everything has fallen into place like magic for me,” said Kingery, speaking to The Vidette the day before her departure into her new life.

Kingery says her kind of music is called “tropical rock.” She describes it as “Latin-flavored adult contemporary” that will “transport you to Mexico’s Pacific coast for an audio vacation.”

On the heels of her first solo release, “Edge of the Ocean,” Kingery teamed up with Rob Hill and Derek Harris, the Washington-based acoustic duo from Olympia, Game Six.

“I have known Rob for a while. After my return from New York, he spotted me performing some karaoke and I started to jam with his band, Game Six.”

Kingery provided vocals on the 2009 Game Six release, “God, or Love, or Mexico,” and started performing with the band at local venues.

After graduation from Elma High School in 1999, Kingery ventured off to New York to attend a two-year program at the American Musical and Dramatic Academy to study musical theatre.

“I have always had a love for music, from a very young age, I played drums, but I really caught the singing bug during high school,” she said. “I was part of the swing choir and landed the lead in the school musical ‘Anything Goes’ my senior year. After that I went to Grays Harbor College for two years pursuing a music major and went out to New York to attend the American Musical and Dramatic Academy.”

Her life brought her back to her roots and family in McCleary after her time in New York.

Finding work in Olympia, Kingery hung out with friends and kept music part of her life. It was not long that she caught the ear of Hill, ended up taking trips down to Mexico, working with Game Six on their album and found what would be her new calling in life.

Just 15 minutes from Bucerias is Puerto Vallarta and the home of Corazon de Nina PV, a local children’s home for those who have been removed from their home due to unstable living conditions.

“All the proceeds from ‘Edge of the Ocean’ go to Corazon de Nina,” she said. “The adoptive mother has taken in so many girls that she needs to expand her house. Our hope is that we can assist her in building another story to her home for the girls.”

Charity and giving back to the community, no matter where she is, has always been part of Kingery’s life. In 2012, she took the stage, along with Game Six, to provide music during the Relay for Life fundraiser at the Grays Harbor County Fairgrounds. This past year, she returned to sing at the Relay for Life in Elma. She has been part of benefits and charity concerts in Mexico. She was also a featured artist at the D.B. Cooper music festival this past Aug. 4, and looks to return for the 2014 festival.

Kingery had also been playing shows in the Olympia area for a couple of years now.

Kingery is already working on her next album release and hopes to have it finished by July of 2014, featuring Kingery and, possibly her latest passion — the ukulele. Kingery has also been nominated as Best Female Vocalist of 2013 by Trop Music Association with a possible future performance at the 6th annual awards show on Oct. 31, at Jimmy Buffett’s Margaritaville Cafe in Key West, Fla. Trop Music Association members vote for the winners and you can become a member at Trop Rock.

“If anyone would have told me that I would be going to New York and Mexico when I was a kid … I would have never believed them,” she said.
