Yes, it's been over a year since we took over the recycling in Bucerias on Earth Day, 22 April 2013. Doesn't time fly when you're having fun!
Thank you to ALL our volunteers - whether actual Amigos members or not - for pitching in and helping out! And what an exciting - and dangerous year it has been! To those who have fallen, bumped their head, trapped their finger in the trailer door, avoided being stung by bees, been rained on, stood in puddles, had liquids (don't ask) from containers pour on to them, been covered in sweat or dust or both, and all the other myriad of cuts and bruises - can you be more careful out there!
Baskets have moved from their destined locations - some to disappear forever (boo). Some have had cars back into them leaving distorted leaning towers that can't always be hammered back into shape (boo). And some are older and just wearing out (boo). We're going to be buying the materials and making replacements for next winter's season, once we have replenished our coffers. Quite a bit of the plastic is being stolen from the baskets, not by someone who really needs it - there's a couple of Nationals in big pick up trucks doing the rounds, specifically on Lazaro Cardenas, and from time to time we see Girrsa haul away quite a few bags before we can get there.
We have had problems with some condo association administrators saying they don't want our baskets and have duly removed them... only to be called back within 2 weeks because those residents told the administrators: "Yes! We DO want them! We DO want to recycle!" Wonderful! Our baskets are now in every condo association set up in all of Bucerias. We like these baskets - they are generally free of trash! Thank you residents!
Yes we do get a fair amount of trash in the baskets on the streets - we reason that at least it's contained there and not lying on the streets! So recycling funds paid for some blue rubbish barrels, marked Amigos de Bucerias VERY clearly on them, made small drainage holes in them - they got stolen. We put larger, 3" holes in them so they could not be used for water storage. Some still went. We cut them in half, a slightly better success rate. It is beyond our comprehension why the barrels, half barrels and plastic bottles baskets are stolen from the community, from the betterment of Bucerias, from the future of the children.
We have concentrated on using our recycling funds to provide street lights: A real success story for Bucerias - see "Street Lights" on our website, And once that project is finished, the next one will be Street Signs (inland side of the highway as the Ocean side is well marked).
As of Earth Day 22 April 2014, once the rubbish had been sorted and removed by the purchasing company, the amount of net plastic we have collected is - drum roll - 10,341 kilos!
It's been an ongoing cycle of volunteers - some for longer than others, to keep this going for a year, and without them this would not have been possible. THANK YOU ALL !! We are down to a real skeleton crew to keep it going through the summer, so if you are still here, if you care, and if you are brave - join us!
