Juvenile Integration Center Director in Puerto Vallarta Discusses 'No Tobacco Day' Psychologist Ma. Beatriz Barron Hernandez - Juvenile Integration Center | |
June 4, 2014 |
This short video explains in a very simple way why we should all support efforts to raise taxes on tobacco, the most effective and cost-effective way of reducing tobacco use around the world. (World Health Organization)
If the demand and offer of tobacco products kill half the customers and damage the health of the other half, the market and traffic are a crime against public health per se, since they infringe the right to health and the life of the human beings (Convención Delito de Genocidio, 1948).
Dear readers, I again take over this space that kindly has been offered to me by PVAngels with the object of sharing scientific and relevant information about the prevention and treatment of alcohol, tobacco and other drugs use. This time, I will address tobacco since "World No Tobacco Day" was just celebrated on May 31st, the date that has the principal objective (WHO) of: contributing to protect the present and future generations not only of devastating consequences of tobacco use in human health, but of the social, environmental and economic scourges derived from the tobacco use and the smoke exposure. The 2014 campaign is to "Raise tobacco taxes."
Tobaccoism is leading as one of the principal causes of mortality and morbidity. It is considered as a chronic addictive and recurring disorder. Because of this, World Health Organization (WHO) recognizes that tobaccoism epidemic spread is a global problem causing severe consequences for public health; killing almost 6 million people every year (1 of 10 adults all over the world). From the 6 million people, 600 thousand are non-smokers, which mean their cause of death is breathing someone else's smoke.
Tobaccoism is also a pediatric epidemic, for new smokers begin at a school period or in a preadolescence stage, turning this into a risk conduct. Many investigations throughout the world assure that adolescents that experiment with their first tobacco use during pre-adolescence tend to maintain in many cases this habit for their rest of their lives. We must remember that adolescence is a stage in which vulnerability to acquire unhealthy habits increases, such as tobacco consumption. It is known that one of the many existing risk factors to consume tobacco during adolescence is to be surrounded by smoking friends; so, by encouraging a positive conduct such as physical activity (sports), reduces the chances of using toxic substances, since it is considered one of the most significant healthy life styles.
Males, unlike females, tend to practice sports focusing on competition, performance and sporting success, ego, social approval or physical condition improvement, which in a way explains the tobacco use rejection, since it is not compatible with sports. Hence, sports propitiate young men to motivate and share similar interest, making special friendship bonds that strengthen their healthy conducts. In this way, both men and women who socialize with non-smokers propitiate a rejection to tobacco and healthy life styles environment.
Meanwhile, women motivations and interest to practice some sports are: amusement, socialization, establishing close relationships, esthetic, weight control and maintaining a good body image. Pitifully, in this last case, many adolescents fear to "look fat" and they eager to look what they call "look nice", "have a nice body" or "to look hot", which brings great anxiety trying to calm it down through tobacco consumption, adding the false belief that "the cigarette makes you thinner" or "cigarette takes away the desire to eat" and if you quit smoking "you are going to get fat"; which, young ladies, is totally false.
Take a look at this my friends!!: studies with adolescents that presented over weight said that they smoked three times more than those that did not present this esthetic problem. It was also discovered that North American adolescents with ages from 9 to 14 initiate tobacco consumption with the motive of weight control. With these facts, it is important to increase and improve our preventive programs to avoid young ladies (because it also happens in our country) to rely on psychoactive substances consumption to maintain a "nice image of themselves", which is really distorted because of wrong information, false believes, complete and only importance on image, leaving aside the truly "essence" of the person, in other words, my friend, what you really are, what you are truly worth, and not precisely for having a "hot body". The "hot body" doesn't make you happy, remember this "you are more than your body weight", so get your self-esteem up!!! Since a low self-esteem can expose you to many risk situations, not only drug use.
Let's remember that a single factor by itself is not a crucial factor for the initiation of an addiction, because addiction has multifactorial causes. Nevertheless, it is important for family parents to be aware of risk conducts presented by our children, with the object of detecting them and properly canalizing them on time with a specialist if necessary. As a start, the best thing to do is to offer our children a healthy family environment, in other ways, to propitiate positive conducts as well as adequate demonstration of affection, clear and precise communication, preventing this way ambiguity; in summary, to show clearly what is expected from the child and to create an environment of support for one another, harmony, equilibrium and clear rules, etc.
Be careful, I do not refer to a 100% happy family with no problems, that in reality does not exist. It is all about what I'm expressing, to accomplish equilibrium between problems and solutions, between agreements and disagreements. It is all about getting to a negotiation in which you and the others express their points of view without being criticized and getting to an accordance in which "everybody" wins, in a situation where "I give and I receive", where "it exists serving and also getting a reward"… Practice, get closer to your teachers, counselors, mentors and other people that can listen and support you with scientific advice, including the staff from the Juvenile Integration Center (CIJ).

TABAQUISMO
31 de mayo "Día Mundial sin tabaco"
Psic. Ma.
