The ninth Festival I Madonnari in Puerto Vallarta will take place on November 7, 8 and 9, 2014 in the main square. This event is organized by the Committee of Sister Cities Puerto Vallarta - Santa Barbara.

Madonnari art originated in Italy during the 16th century. Itinerant artists were brought to the cities and commissioned to paint the great cathedrals. Upon completion of the assignments, and the need to find some alternate mode of survival, they began to recreate the images of the construction on the pavement.

The term madonnari comes from the fact that these images originally were mostly madonnas.

In the United States, artists who practice this creative art expression are called "street painters" and in Germany, "Strassenmaler."

Open Call for Participants:

To all artists interested in participating in the Festival with painting art on pavement using chalk or pastel, the following categories are included:

• Children under 12 years
• Children ages 13 to 17
• Adults

The Committee Organizer will provide the necessary materials to participants.

The work will be performed in the Main Plaza of Puerto Vallarta starting on Friday, November 7 until Sunday, November 9 at 7:00 pm.

The awards ceremony and closing will be on Sunday, November 9, at 7:00 pm in the main square.

The artist creating the first place award in the adult category will receive a trip to Santa Barbara, California, with all expenses covered and the opportunity to participate in the next I Madonnari Festival in Santa Barbara to represent our city.

The deserving artists of first place in the children's categories will gain a cash prize and a scholarship to study painting.

The winners will be chosen on drawing, composition, use of color and depth of the works.

The registration of participants will take place in the main square on Monday, November 7, from 9:00 am to 11:00 am. At that time, participants will be provided with materials and their assigned workspace.
