Amigos de La Cruz Environmental Committee Needs Help in 'Cleaning Up Their Act'

Lina Bureau - Amigos de La Cruz
March 17, 2015

Wowie Zowie!

I ventured out for an early morning walk and wowie zowie the highway and streets of La Cruz have never looked so good! It makes me proud to be part of the Amigos de La Cruz.

We’ve come a long way thanks to Steve Cross, the new President of the Amigos, and his vision of a cleaner, more welcoming La Cruz. Our amazing Environmental Committee now consists of myself (Lina Bureau), David Hibbard, Sandi and Kent Nelson, Hans Petermann and Duncan Randall. Last, but certainly not least are Pedro and Cesar who are out there each day enthusiastically cleaning, trimming, cutting and sorting.

Steve asked me to take over recycling this summer. Thanks Steve, it’s a great challenge and I welcome the opportunity to continue what we’ve started in hopes that our friends who leave for the summer will return to a community that looks as nice as it did when they left.

Recycling is as important to me as I’m sure it is to you. Since the 1950’s those of us from Canada and the US have become aware of the harmful effects of plastics in our oceans, rivers and lakes. With all of us working together we can improve the quality of life not just for ourselves, but also for all living creatures on the land and the sea.

Our Environmental Committee has been hard at work. Two weeks ago we began a door-to-door campaign of handing out educational flyers, attaching new banners to our recycling bins and placing banners on Pedro’s work truck.

The response and enthusiasm from the community has been positive and we’re starting to see more interest from our neighbors as well as some of the larger resorts in the area. The reality though is that it costs money to do what we do. We pay Pedro and Cesar their wages, health care and social security. It costs money to keep Pedro’s truck filled with gas and in good working condition. The recycling bins and plastic garbage cans we distribute cost money. It even costs money to hold fundraisers so that we can raise more money!

We need your support. If each of you can donate just a little bit (or a little bit more) we can keep our town looking fabulous. All you need to do is contact any of our board members, send an email to us at, or if you’re reading this from afar you can go to Amigos de La Cruz and use the Payments and Donations function. If you would like a tax deductible receipt for Canada or the US, let us know before you donate and we can make it happen!

Thanks to all!
