Bucerias Recycling Update

What a long hot summer it's been, yet our incredible volunteers have faithfully gone out on the streets, collecting in the plastic - and possibly losing a few pounds along the way! We are a really small team during the summer - just 6 of us full time residents keeping the whole of Bucerias as clean as possible with our twice a week pickups.

The amount of plastic didn't actually diminish during the summer as we are also a tourist resort for the Nationals - but we did notice a big drop in September when everyone left town.

We continue to have baskets stolen, but for those that remain they are being used now more correctly for plastic as opposed to general rubbish. It's just a shame that it is only PET #1 and #2 that are of any recycling "value" - not other numbers and not glass. Poco a poco.

Since we took on this project in April 2013, we have now collected - net of all the miscellaneous stuff - recyclable value weighing just over 28,000 kilos! That's an awful lot when you consider how light plastic is!

We always welcome volunteers at any time of the year, it's just for a couple of hours on Monday and Thursday, and we are absolutely desperate for someone with a vehicle capable of towing our trailer - we can find a driver if you don't have the time.

Amigos de Bucerias Update

We require four people living in Bucerias, to be nominated for the new Executive Committee for 2016.

The details of each position: President, Vice, Secretary and Treasurer, are on the Amigos website.  Nominations must be received by the deadline of December 1, 2015, to include a few words about that person and a photo, which will be posted on the website. Voting will take place at the Annual General Meeting on January 2, 2016. If we do not have a full committee of four then the Association will have to be closed down. This would be a great shame as over the past years we have seen improvements to our town through our various projects - and of course there is always much more that can be done.

Tercera Edad (Senior Citizen Center) Update

Monies raised last season from the BBQ Party with the delightful singer Emalee Hill and her father Rob; the incredibly popular Drag Race; and the ongoing 50-50 raffles at the Luna Lounge have been used to construct a large hen coop, purchase and raise the chicks, and then receive income from the sales of eggs and hens.

The most needy seniors, or those who were sick, received eggs and hens and good ol chicken soup thanks to the tireless efforts of President Cirino! And the John Ozzello Memorial Food Bank continues to provide monthly dispensasto them as well.

There were also a couple of corn harvests, thanks to all volunteers from the community. Money has also been used to pay for medicines, visits to the doctor, and 10 lucky seniors now have teeth to smile and eat with! The hard work of President Cirino is not without its down side - the mysterious death overnight of 100 hens, and the sad demise over the summer of 7 of the seniors. Tragically in three cases it was because they did not take their medicines, and there was nobody to visit them and remind them.

Bucerias Beach Clean Up

This month our beach clean up will take place on Saturday, November 14 at 9:00 am - 10:00 am.

Our usual second Saturday of the month clean up – beach and arroyo – and it is all making a difference! Well done and thank you! See you there – please bring supermarket plastic bags to fill with rubbish. We will be collecting plastic separately. Long handled tongs help save on a lot of that bending over!

We have a beautiful beach, come and enjoy it… Every little bit helps!
