La Cruz Environmental Group and Cetmar Unite to Recycle Plastic Lina Bureau - Amigos de La Cruz

Wow, we are collecting more plastic every week, thanks to a collaboration between Amigos de La Cruz' Environmental Group and Neike, a Cetmar student group focusing on sustainable practices.

Every Monday, Cesar and I drive Paloma (our white truck) around town to collect plastic from 35 bins, plus bins on the beach, and from the developments Alamar, Punta Pelicanos, Vista Pelicanos, La Joya and La Puntilla.

Once collected the plastic is taken to Cetmar, our local technical-professional school, where the Neike students help crush the plastic and place into bags.

With a touch of joy, music and dancing, the students crushed 150 kilos of plastic in 3 hours last Saturday. This is a dirty, smelly job, and they help with so much enthusiasm.

Once crushed and placed in bags, the recycling company comes by to retrieve the plastic, pay us by weight, and drops off more bags.

In exchange for their help, Amigos gives 50% of the net proceeds to Neike. The remaining 50% goes to pay Amigos de La Cruz employee Cesar for his work around town; everything from street cleaning to recycling.

We all needed a good shower after that, and a siesta!
