Isla Cuale Spay/Neuter Clinic

On April 3rd, PuRR Project sponsored a FREE Spay/Neuter Clinic on the Isla Cuale in Old Town Vallarta.

We are so thankful to the 20 volunteers who came out to help with registration, set-up, after-care and breakdown.

It was a long day, starting before sunrise as locals lined up to register their kittens, cats, puppies…..and some VERY large dogs!! Fortunately, the vets who work at weekly PEACE clinics really know how to handle large numbers and all went smoothly for the 50 animals that were sterilized that Sunday morning.

Thank you to the PuRR supporters who stepped up to finance this clinic (cost is 150 pesos per animal plus various supplies and lunches for the vet team).

We have committed to do another free clinic the first Sunday in October.

Featured Feline: Taco

This handsome orange and white cat has been living in a casita at the PuRR shelter since January, after he was rescued living in a pile of boulders on the Marina golf course.

He was first spotted by Terri Hillis when she was vacationing at Casa Velas.

She began leaving food and water for him and realized he was lost or abandoned as he was not at all feral and welcomed human attention.

She contacted PuRR and made a generous contribution to cover his testing, neutering and vaccinations.

Taco is now ready for his Forever Home! If you are interesting in adopting Taco or one of our other “teenage” cats, please contact Linda at adopt@purrproject.com.

Bowie and her rescuer Louis-Philippe

Bowie’s Journey to Montreal

Nathalie Collin and husband Louis-Philippe Garnier first spotted this stray cat hanging around their apartment on the hill behind town during their vacation this past winter.

They called the cat “Bowie” after David Bowie who had just passed away…..and it also had remarkable two-colored eyes, one blue and one yellow.

Turns out she was a female, but the name stayed!

When they had to return home, PuRR agreed to keep Bowie at the shelter while they looked for a home among friends in Montreal. That didn’t take long as her Facebook photo was so beautiful.

Philippe returned to Puerto Vallarta in March with plans this time to take her back on a direct flight with Air Transat. Unfortunately, they only take pets in cargo, not in the cabin, and we had never sent a cat that way so were a bit concerned.

But a reservation was made, a hard carrier purchased and a volunteer met Philippe at the Vallarta airport on the appointed morning with Miss Bowie in hand. All went well on the flight and she is now at her Forever Home in Montreal with Lucie Deslauriers and is learning to meow in French!

Sombro and Shadow

Adoption Update: Shadow

Last month we featured a Russian Blue named “Shadow” who desperately needed a new home after being returned to PuRR.

After spending a year in a home situation, it is very difficult and cruel to put a cat back into the shelter setting and they do not fare well.

Luckily for him, Charlie and Carol McCullough were willing to give him a chance in their home, where they already had a female cat….also named Shadow!!

So he has a new name, “Sombro” (Sombra means shadow in Spanish) and will spend his time between Puerto Vallarta and Oakland, CA.

Carol reports that the hissy phase is over and they are showing signs of becoming friends.

Charlie and Carol are also great supporters of our shelter and have an AMAZING 15 cats that they have “Virtually” adopted this past year.

Learn more about how YOU can Virtually Adopt one of our adult shelter cats for yourself or as a gift to a cat-loving friend by visiting our VIRTUAL ADOPTION on our website.

Gracias! Thanks! Merci!

We would like to send out a big “Thank You” to all the wonderful folks who supported us this past season at our various fundraising events!

Our Shelter Tours were a highlight for many Vallarta visitors who got a chance to see the ranch in person and meet some of our over 150 cats and kittens.

Bob Doelger, Pam Sullivan and Marilyn Khan all did a great job organizing and leading the tours this year, and are working on improving the experience for next high season. Stay tuned for tour dates.
